Crystal Palace is a great place to live. It has loads of great restaurants and pubs, fantastic independent shops and a real sense of community. But for too long there has been one major thing missing – a cinema.
Believe it or not there have been four different cinemas in Crystal Palace over the years. With a bit of luck there will be another one in the not too distant future. But until that happens you have to drag yourself to Croydon or Streatham to watch a film. Or rather, you did until we came along!
Crystal Palace Pictures brings the magic of the silver screen to Crystal Palace in the comfort of the Gipsy Hill Tavern. We’re a not-for-profit film society run by the community, for the community. Every other Thursday, we show the best of independent, world, classic and documentary cinema. We show films old and new, in English and from around the world. Never predictable, sometimes challenging — and always a great night out.
As well as showing feature films, we showcase the work of local film makers. There’s a lot of talent out there and we want to give people a place where they can present their work to a live audience. So, if you have a short film you’d like us to show, get in touch.
On our opening night, we showed ‘The Broken Jaw’ by BAFTA nominated and multi award winning Chris Shepherd. And Chris was kind enough to introduce his film and to answer questions afterwards. So watch this space for more up and coming stars of British cinema.
And in the future, who knows? One off specials? A Crystal Palace Film Festival? Outdoor screenings in Crystal Palace Park? Anything is possible, it’s just up to us all to make it happen!
